Happy days :: Holiday baking and making

Do you and your kids do a lot of baking and making for the holidays (whatever you may celebrate!). I love the smells of spices in the kitchen — vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, orange — spiced drinks and eggnog, ginger snap cookies [downloadable PDF] and gingerbread and speculaas cookies (pictured above — lots of holiday cookies recipes from around the world available in our celebration issue from this time last year).

Last year we were all about the pfeffernusse and ginger snaps, we usually make a batch of gingerbread men, and pretty much always make shortbread — we love using our holiday cookie cutter collection. We love the Latvian version of gingerbread “piparkukas” (as made by grandma) — it has more pepper and cardamon and less ginger. But this year it is all about the speculaas [gingerbread cookies from Netherlands and Belgium) -- lots of cinnamon and not so much ginger. And we are all about the eggnog -- non-alcoholic version for breakfast is so so good!
